How to Apply

The GIE application process is competitive, and only complete, thoughtful and timely applications will be considered. The attributes Global Programs look for in a GIE participant include: open-mindedness, professionalism, flexibility, maturity, curiosity, respectfulness, and cultural sensitivity. To apply for a GIE, submit the following materials via the application link below by November 6, 2024 (11:59pm). Please note, applicants must be in good academic standing with the program and with the Office of Student Conduct.

    • It is highly recommended that you arrange appointments with the GIE Faculty, GIE Staff leaders, and MBA Global Programs Director (Valerie Slate) prior to submitting your application to discuss your interest. Contact information can be found on the specific GIE pages.
The GIE application essays are a very important factor in the selection process and will be reviewed by a panel of Global Programs staff members and the faculty leading each GIE. The essays should be at least two pages each (double spaced, 10-12 pt font). Your full name and the GIE you are applying for should appear on each essay. The application will ask you to indicate your top two GIE program choices. You must should submit an essay for each GIE you are applying for. It is important to note, that you must be able to participate in the GIE in which you are applying (i.e., double check your commitments prior to submitting your application).

Option 1: Written essay

The essay should be a minimum of two pages (double spaced, 10-12pt font). Your full name and the GIE you are applying for should appear on your essay. Upload your document in the fields provided bellow.

Option 2: Video essay
The video essay should be 3-5 minutes long. Your full name and the GIE you are applying for should appear at the start of your video. Paste the URL to your video in the fields provided bellow.

Your essays should be focused on the academic, business, and cultural development reasons for your participation in a GIE program. Address all of the following topics in your essay:

  • What are your primary motivations for participating in a GIE?
  • Why have you chosen this particular program (region/theme)?
  • How will this GIE contribute to your future success?
  • A GIE is a shared experience; with that in mind, what qualities will you bring to the group to make it a successful experience for all?
Once the application deadline has passed, the selection committee will carefully evaluate each individual application, taking into consideration a number of factors including:

  • In good standing with the program and UNC both academic & code of conduct
  • Strength of essay
  • Motivation for participation
  • Academic performance
  • Communication during the application process
  • Best fit for a diverse team

Students in all areas are welcome and encouraged to apply. Students need only demonstrate curiosity, interest, and desire to learn. Pending review of application materials, candidates may be invited to interview for a position. You will be notified of our acceptance decision by email within two weeks after the application deadline has passed. Each GIE will consist of no more than 25 students.

Sometimes space is limited due to number of spots available. If this happens, MBA Global Programs will work with you on your second choice program.

Selected students will be notified of their acceptance to the program(s) by email typically within two weeks of the application deadline. If you are not chosen for your first choice but are offered a space in a different GIE, it is important that you reply with your decision as soon as possible as we will only be able to hold this space for a limited time.
In order to secure your placement to the GIE program(s), you will need to complete a series of forms indicating your commitment to the program(s). Forms will include: Post Decision & Commitment, Professionalism Policy, Refund Policy, and Responsibilities & Release form. This information will be emailed directly to participating students. 

It is important to note that an acceptance notification does not indicate you are confirmed into the program(s). You must complete all Post Decision & Commitment forms by the stated deadline in order to secure your placement.
